NIHR Launches National Digital Health Research Hubs to Accelerate Innovation and NHS Adoption

London, UK – The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has today announced a substantial new initiative to supercharge digital health innovation across the United Kingdom. Five new national digital health research hubs will be established, backed by an initial government investment of £150 million over five years. This strategic move is designed to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical implementation within the National Health Service.

The hubs, strategically located across key innovation ecosystems, will serve as focal points for multidisciplinary research, bringing together clinicians, data scientists, engineers, behavioural psychologists, and health economists. Their primary mission will be to develop, test, and evaluate digital health technologies that address pressing NHS challenges, such as chronic disease management, mental health support, and efficient patient pathways.

Minister for Health Technology, Dr. Alistair Finch, stated, “This investment marks a pivotal moment for digital health in the UK. By creating dedicated centres of excellence, we can accelerate the development of transformative technologies that genuinely improve patient care, reduce health inequalities, and boost the UK’s standing as a global leader in healthcare innovation. These hubs will be crucial in ensuring that innovation translates into tangible benefits for our NHS.”

A key aspect of the hubs’ mandate will be to facilitate closer collaboration between academic institutions, digital health startups, established MedTech companies, and NHS trusts. This 'ecosystem approach' is intended to ensure that research is clinically relevant, scalable, and ultimately adopted by the NHS effectively.

Funding for the hubs will support infrastructure, specialist staff, and a pipeline of research projects focusing on areas like AI-driven diagnostics, remote monitoring platforms, digital therapeutics, and personalised patient engagement tools. Ethical considerations, data security, and patient involvement will be embedded from the outset of all research programmes.

NHS England has expressed strong support for the initiative, viewing the hubs as vital partners in achieving its long-term digital transformation goals. The expectation is that the research conducted will inform national policy and procurement decisions, ensuring that the NHS invests in proven, impactful digital solutions.

Industry stakeholders have lauded the NIHR's proactive approach.
